Sebastian Vettel makes Esports debut in Legends' Trophy
He teased getting involved in sim racing, and now Sebastian Vettel has delivered after debuting in the Legends Trophy.
In the opening round of the second All-Star Series season, drivers were faced with two eight-lap races around a virtual Sepang, driving Brabham BT44B cars on rFactor 2.
Vettel had been tempted to get involved in Esports while the real-life racing is on hold – one of the main motivations being the success and enjoyment his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc was finding in it.
It was a man who Vettel knows very well from Formula 1 though who secured pole, that being Jenson Button as the 2009 Formula 1 World Champion bettered Emanuele Pirro in qualifying by 0.028s.
But at Turn 1 Button ran wide as he tried to block Pirro, leaving the door open for him and Jan Magnussen to challenge into Turn 2.
Three didn’t go into one at the apex, and Button was shuffled down to P15.
The race would be won by fellow ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya who took advantage of a collision between Andy Priaulx and Dario Franchitti to move into the lead and control the race from there.
Button would ultimately recover to P2 after a late pass on Vitantonio Liuzzi; Vettel finished P15, meaning he would start from P7 for the reverse-grid second race.
It was a very promising start for Vettel who was up to P3 for a short time thanks mainly to a multi-car incident ahead, but he spun going through the penultimate corner and was dumped to the back of the pack.
The four-time World Champion would finish the race P12, while out in front it was Adrian Fernandez who took the victory in race two.
Button finished down in P8, one place behind Liuzzi after making contact with the Italian racer on the opening lap.
