Lando Norris open to joining Ferrari at some point in the future

Lando Norris is open to joining Ferrari in the future, saying he could be driving for them in a decade or so.

The McLaren racer is one of the most highly-rated young drivers around at the moment, enjoying an excellent 2021 campaign.

His strong performances earned him a contract extension earlier this year, now all but certain to stay in papaya until the end of 2023 at least.

At that point, he will still only be 24 and signing him would surely be a hugely appealing prospect to every team on the grid, including Ferrari.

He has not closed the door on one day joining the Italian team and enjoys the support he received from the nation’s fans at Monza.

“At the moment, I’m happy where I am,” he told gazzetta.it.

“And I’ve just extended my contract with McLaren, with whom I want to win the World Championship both for Drivers and Constructors.

“In 10 years, I don’t know what will happen. It’s true I have a lot of Italian fans, and I could see that at Monza where they waited for me outside the hotel and at the circuit and I could feel their great warmth.”

Currently driving for the Scuderia is Norris’ former team-mate, Carlos Sainz.

The two struck up a strong relationship in their two years spent together as team-mates at McLaren, becoming close friends.

When the Spaniard left for Ferrari, he was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo – and Norris says the two of them, as well as his relationships with them, are very different, in large part due to the Australian being older.

“Daniel is very different to Carlos, also because he is six years older, I think,” said the Briton.

“I became friends with Carlos because we like to race and we were very competitive with each other, even on the simulator or playing golf. We like the same things and it was easy to get along.

“With Daniel it was different, but he is really the same person you see on TV. He’s very nice and we spend a lot of fun moments together.

“He’s a great driver and I learn a lot from him.”
