It’s Pikes Peak Weekend! Watch a Modded Tesla Model S Plaid Fly Up the Mountain

Unplugged Performance is on a quest. The Tesla tuning shop has long had its eye on Pikes Peak as the ultimate event to showcase its EV modding prowess. Last year, the company ran a stripped-out Model 3 that looked ferociously quick right up until it got crashed. This year, Unplugged is back with an upgraded version of the just-launched Model S Plaid, with three motors and 1020 hp. And if the practice video is any indication, Unplugged’s dream of a blistering time seems like a done deal.

In the video, hotshoe Randy Pobst takes to the Peak for a practice run. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its meaty tires and lightened curb weight, the Model S zings through the corners. On the straights, though, it is a different species. The Plaid is already the quickest-accelerating production car ever made; strip out hundreds of pounds and it only gets more bonkers. Time appears to be speeding up during its acceleration runs out of corners.

The pace is certainly enough to make a splash at the main event. The only question is whether the Unplugged team—after last year’s debacle, not to mention a tow rig breakdown on the way to the Peak—can overcome its past bad luck and get the Plaid through the weekend.
