The all-new five-door Astra will be one of Vauxhall’s first models to embrace new electric technology. Alongside petrol and diesel engines optimised in a six-speed automatic gearbox, a plug-in hybrid model promises to open the “next chapter” for the firm.
The move will electrify Vauxhall’s compact class moles for the first time in its range’s history and is the first step to reaching its pure electric goal by 2028.
Paul Willcox, Managing Director of Vauxhall said the new model has been developed with the “utmost precision”.
He added the car was expected to become “another best seller” and would “attract new customers”.
He said: “The All-New Astra arrives with sensational design and class-leading levels of technology.
“With the choice of an electrified powertrain, the All-New Astra has been developed with utmost precision, down to the smallest detail.
“We are confident the next generation Astra has all it takes to become another bestseller and continue to attract new customers to the brand.”
Power will range from 81kW to 96kW on the plug-in models with an eight-speed automatic transmission available for the more powerful models.
The new Astra will also incorporate the latest automated driver assistance technology.

Under braking, the new model promises to deliver “strong stopping power” while remaining “highly stable”.
Vauxhall has confirmed it will open its order books for the new car by the Autumn.
