The Hybridized Mercedes-AMG GT73 Is Coming to Eat the GT63’s Lunch—and Soon
Fire-breathing, V-8-loving AMG is going hybrid whether you like it or not, and the first of its heavily hybridized options will be a plug-in hybrid version of the GT63 AMG four door. This gas-electric performance four-door is likely to be called the GT73. Think of it as AMG’s answer to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-hybrid. There isn’t much we don’t know about the upcoming GT73 except when we’ll finally see it in full.
Auto enthusiasts like ourselves are an impatient bunch. We’re always digging around for spy shots or teasers of what’s coming next. Thankfully, the wait for the GT73 isn’t for too much longer. AMG revealed in an Instagram post that the new GT four-door will make its debut on September 1 of this year.
As for all the other juicy details, we think we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. For starters, there will definitely be more power, a lot more. The current V-8-powered GT63 tops out at 630 horsepower—barely enough to get the poor thing out of its own way (we kid). The GT73 will seriously up the ante and provide a maximum combined output of more than 800 horsepower (likely with the help of some sort of electrified “overboost” function).
There will also be more weight, thanks to the addition of an electric motor or two and some batteries, but how much is still a sort of mystery. The last GT63S we weighed tipped the scales at 4,670 pounds. It’s no featherweight, but the GT73 will likely add a couple hundred pounds to that number courtesy of the electric bits.
Other things like price, claimed performance figures, and other details will have to wait until the full unveil. But, at least we know that the wait won’t be that long.
