Stellantis to Snuggle Up With Amazon, Exchange Tech and Vehicles
It seems like every automotive company is becoming a tech or mobility-focused company—or trying to appear to. And Stellantis isn’t the exception. In fact, Carlos Tavares, its CEO, started his 2022 CES press conference by saying that the company is in the midst of becoming a technology and mobility solutions company. And the first step in that transformation starts by partnering with big tech players like Amazon to bring a new in-vehicle experience to its customers.
Amazon and Stellantis announced a multi-year partnership to bring Amazon services such as Alexa and FireTV to vehicles set to debut in 2024. The agreement includes the delivery of electric Ram ProMasters for Amazon’s last mile delivery services and the use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Stellantis’ cloud provider for vehicle platforms.
“Working together with Amazon is an integral part of our capability building roadmap, based on both developing internal competencies and decisive collaborations with tech leaders, and it will bring significant expertise to one of our key technology platforms, STLA SmartCockpit,” said Tavares.
SmartCockpit is the new software platform set to arrive to all of Stellantis’ new vehicles starting in 2024. It will include Alexa-enabled voice services, navigation, vehicle maintenance, e-commerce marketplaces and payment services. What’s more, SmartCockpit will adapt to customer’s behaviors and interests. Jeeps could, for example, be equipped with an off-road app that teaches drivers how to optimize their performance off-road, while the Chrysler Pacifica could use a family-trip planner that locates restaurants and points of interests on a road trip.
The new infotainment system will also allow customers to monitor their homes from the road. From setting the temperature of their home from their car using Alexa services, to scheduling service, the in-vehicle experience will be quite different from the one we know today.
Currently, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer integrate Amazon Fire TV on the rear-seat entertainment screens (pictured above), allowing customers to pick up exactly where they left off on a movie or TV show they were watching at home. The company will expand that across the rest of the brands in the future
Although Tavares didn’t reveal the number of electric Ram ProMasters that Stellantis will build for Amazon, he said that it was a “significant” number. Currently, Amazon uses the Fiat e-Ducato, Peugeot e-Boxer, and Citroën e-Jumper in Europe, but this would be the first application of the battery-electric ProMaster in Amazon’s fleet.
And while the customer might not see much use of the AWS’ interface, engineers will be using its tools behind the scenes. Tavares said that AWS will also help the company accelerate the time it takes to bring new digital products to market.
“We are inventing solutions that will help enable Stellantis to accelerate connected and personalized in-vehicle experiences, so that every moment in motion can be smart, safe and tailored to each occupant. Together, we will create the foundation for Stellantis to transform from a traditional automaker into a global leader in software-driven development and engineering,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon.
We’ll see how this transformation rolls out in the next few years, but the company is partnering with one of the best in the business in this transformation. Already the Chrysler Airflow Concept is showing the direction the brand is headed, and more exciting things are coming for the rest of the brands.
