A SORN is used to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) that your car is not currently being used. This means that, while you remain the owner of the car, it cannot be driven on public roads.

Registering for a SORN can be done online, by post or over the phone.

The process is free of charge so it’s worth doing if you are not using your vehicle during the lockdown.

Once a SORN is made, the car must be kept on a driveway, in a garage or on private land.

Motorists will get a refund for any full months of remaining tax.

Car owners can also stop paying insurance on a car that is declared off the road.

However, if you’re caught driving a car with a SORN you could be fined up to £2,500.

You can also be fined £80 for failing to tax a car that hasn’t been declared SORN.

The DLVA’s chief executive said last year: “The number of untaxed vehicles on the road is falling, but we are determined to reduce this even further.

“We operate a range of measures to make vehicle tax easy to pay and hard to avoid, so there really is no excuse if you fail to tax your vehicle.”

To remove a SORN, simply tax the car again but ensure the vehicle’s MOT and insurance are still valid before driving.

Under the UK’s lockdown guidelines, the government says only travel is permitted.

This means you should only leave your home to shop for basic goods, health reasons or to work, if you cannot do so from home.
