Shared car schemes could ‘ease congestion’ but ‘many’ still prefer their own vehicles

James Taylor, General Manager at Zipcar UK admitted “many” drivers prefer to have their own cars. However, he backed shared ownership schemes as a “great alternative” that could be expanded.
Mr Taylor has also made a financial argument for shared ownership schemes.
He warned drivers may “only pay for the time” they are using their vehicles meaning many could save money.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Many do prefer to have their own vehicle, we’re not going to shy away from that.
“But thousands use car clubs every day to get them where they need to be.
“Car clubs provide easy access to vehicles and give people the freedom to only pay for the time they need the vehicles.”
He added: “One of the reasons car clubs are considered a great alternative is their ability to ease congestion and provide access to newer vehicles.
“The latest statistics from CoMo (Collaborative Mobility) suggest that each car club vehicle in London takes 23 privately owned vehicles off the road.”
The warning comes just weeks after a Government minister warned of a move away from car ownership.

Transport minister Trudy Harrison has called for a move away from “20th-century thinking centred around private vehicle ownership”.
She made the comments at the CoMoUK national conference back in December.
She added that she backed a new system that would be “fit for the future” and give drivers “greater flexibility”.
Ms Harrison said the UK was at a “tipping point” where shared mobility would soon be a “realistic option”.
She said it could soon be possible shared vehicle hubs would be available to book and pay for at the touch of a smartphone.
The minister added: “I think the benefits are really significant: from clean air to healthier populations to greater connectivity for more people, no matter where they live.”
Mr Taylor has also pushed for there to be a “greater expansion” of car clubs and hire services.
He suggested an increase in the volume of schemes would likely lead to a “shift in attitudes” among drivers.
He previously said: “There needs to be a greater expansion of car club services across the UK.
“The more people see car clubs on their street and recognise the convenience of them, the more we will see a shift in attitudes and usage.
“But we also need policies to support this expansion.
“The Department for Transport has set out plans to support car clubs to go fully zero-emission.
“But we need cities and local authorities to promote car-sharing schemes more widely as an affordable way to access electric vehicles for example.”
