Students Matthew and Katie were visiting their family in Thonton-le-Dale, Yorkshire, this weekend and drove to Pickering on Sunday for a day out. Matt, a second-year student at the University of Southampton said he forgot to pay for a parking ticket and expected a steep fine.

When he got back to his car, he found a note from a stranger.

It read: “Parking warden came so we bought you a ticket.

“Saved you a fine.”

The note was left on his windscreen alongside a £2 parking ticket.

The ticket was valid for an hour.

Matt’s mother said they were very grateful for the kind samaritan’s act.

She said:  “Matt has only had the car back two weeks after someone crashed into the back of them in August and nearly wrote it off.

“He kind of didn’t need a parking fine so we’re very grateful to the very kind person who did this,” she told Yorkshire Live.

Matt and University of York student Katie, who are from rural South Lincolnshire, visit North Yorkshire regularly.

They said they find the people here “are always so friendly, helpful and kind”.

The Government website says a parking ticket or penalty charge notice depends on what type it is and who issued it.

Drivers normally have 28 days to pay, and oftentimes the fine is reduced if paid within 14 days.
