New Peugeot e-5008 flagship SUV spotted for the first time

Peugeot is bringing all-electric power to the next generation 5008 and we’ve spotted the car out testing

Plans to electrify the 5008 have been in the works since 2020 but this is the first time we’ve seen Peugeot testing the new all-electric model.

The next generation Peugeot 5008 should adopt the ‘e-5008’ name to align with Peugeot’s e-208, e-2008 and upcoming e-308. While the e-3008 – Peugeot’s first ground-up electric car – is expected to launch later this year, the larger e-5008 will be revealed next year ahead of a 2025 release. This all falls within Peugeot’s recently announced ‘E-Lion’ roadmap, which will see five new electric Peugeots sit alongside mild-hybrid offerings in the range.

  • New Peugeot 3008 could have a 400-mile-plus electric range

The current 5008 has been with us since 2017, sitting on the second-generation EMP2 platform. This architecture doesn’t support a full EV, with the 5008 only just receiving mild-hybrid power. The new e-5008 will sit on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform and the firm’s CEO Carlos Tavares previously told Auto Express it would “deliver more than 700km [434 miles] of range”. The bulky SUV shape of the e-5008 will probably see that number diminish a fair bit, however.

The battery pack in the e-5008 will be the largest yet seen on a Peugeot. The STLA Medium platform allows for 87 to 104kWh capacity batteries, far above the new e-308’s 54kWh battery unit.

As for this test car in these pictures, it’s still heavily clad in camouflage but we can make out some key design points. The front end has a bluffness to it with thin LED headlights and a small opening on the lower bumper. The door handles sit flush with the body to promote aerodynamic efficiency and the whole profile looks like that of a conventional SUV – albeit a little more rakish than the current 5008, set off by a sporty roof spoiler to the rear.

Seven seats will still be offered, to help it stand out from the e-3008 and we can expect a five-seat version as well. The interior will probably feature Peugeot’s next generation of i-Cockpit cabin layout and as the firm promised in its E-Lion announcement, there will be more recycled materials and customisable interior trims. Over-the-air updates will also be used to keep the e-5008 competitive.
