New cycle road plans will make cities ‘no go zones’ for cars which may ‘decimate business’
Road upgrades will see an extra £2billion spent on new “taxpayer finance cycleways” which only around three epercxnet of drivers actually want, according to Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK. He warned the “majority will not use” the new cycle routes when they are installed and warned the new plans could “decimate businesses and the economies of major towns and cities”.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised to build thousands of miles of protected cycle routes in towns and cities which will set higher standards for infrastructure.
He has also promised to decrease “low traffic neighborhoods” which will help reduce traffic levels and improve air quality.
This will involve putting into place “school streets” to reduce traffic levels around students.
The scheme will also include a bold aim to create at least one zero-emission city centre in a major blow to road users.
Higher standards for cycling infrastructure have also been outlined with plans which will see future schemes designed better around cyclists needs.
The proposals outline that schemes which make pedestrians and cyclists share the same space or do not make a “meaningful change” to the road will not be funded.
The plans will also aim to encourage people to take up cycling as part of their commute or daily routine.
This will see more cycle racks installed at transport hubs and across city centres with new bike hangers and on street storage for those who don’t have room at home.

This cycling first approach could boost the takeup of bikes around cities but could have a dramatic effect on those who rely on their vehicles for work.
Mr Cox said the plans show the Prime Minister would “betray” heavily taxed motorists to install the new scheme.
He said: “In his latest craving to make us all thin and healthy, our Prime Minister is happy to make our towns and cities no go zones for the internal combustion engine.
“Favouring only three percent of road users in the UK, Boris is to betray the world’s already highest taxed motorists, van drivers and truckers to put in place virtual signalling urban no driving areas.

“[This will be] replaced with taxpayers financed cycleways, that the massive majority will not use.
“This Government’s ignorance will decimate businesses and the economies of our major towns and cities and is a naive knee jerk response to those emotive driven, well financed, so called environmental groups based in the London bubble.”
The Prime Minister called the new scheme the government’s “biggest and boldest plan yet to boost active travel”.
The scheme comes as part of Mrt Johnson’s new focus to tackle ill health which he feels will reduce the demand on the NHS going forwards.
A study by the AA has revealed half of drivers who also cycle say that provisions for those using their bikes are “bad”.
The survey also found that three in ten drivers used their bike with two percent taking up cycling during the coronavirus pandemic.
AA President Edmund King backed the proposals which he believes would “improve safety for all road users”.
He said: “As a third of drivers said they would cycle, walk or run more after lockdown these proposals should be broadly welcomed to improve safety for all road users.
“The improvements in air quality during the crisis should encourage local councils to build dedicated cycle routes, away from traffic where possible, and create ‘park & pedal’ schemes to encourage active travel into town centres for those that live further away.”
