New Clean Air Zone charges in major UK cities and the planned ULEZ expansion was “forcing people to sell their cars”, according to the experts. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Malcolm McKay, spokesperson for the HCVA warned many had even “scrapped” their historic models as a result of the new charges.
He warned the new rules could “legislate history off the roads” and warned classic models could “all disappear” if action is not taken.
Speaking to Express.co.uk He said: “ULEZ and these other Clean Air Zones is a very big worry.
“It is forcing people to sell their cars and even scrap their cars which is a tragedy really.
“The idea you legislate a whole chunk of history off the roads is scary really.
“I do think there is a need to move more towards viewing historic vehicles in the same way as historic buildings are regarded in this country.
“[They are] protected and are exempt from a lot of the legislation.
“Yes we do have exemptions for cars over 40 years old which is terrific.
“But it does leave a large chunk of history not protected.

“The danger is if we don’t act now they will all disappear completely.
“The remaining classic cars will only be the ones that are currently over 40 years old.
“But obviously they will be getting progressively older and less usable as time goes on. “
Classic cars over 40 years old are exempt from most Clen AIr Zones including London’s ULEZ scheme.
