Musk Calls CyberLandr Camper For Cybertruck 'Cool' In Tweet
It’s certainly a smart idea, and it seems Musk also approves of the camping concept for the Cybertruck, as he recently took to Twitter with a short message simply calling the Cyberlandr “cool.”
Of course, this is all just theory for now. Tesla hasn’t yet revealed the Cybertruck’s final production form, so there aren’t even specific dimensions to base a prototype camper shell on, never mind build one. Still, that hasn’t stopped excited Cybertruck fans from shelling out cash to reserve a Cyberlandr camper. As of the end of April, Cyberlandr Co-Founder Bill French said the company had over 1,000 reservations. Given the not-insubstantial cost of the all-electric camper, the reservations total over $50 million in potential revenue, provided all the reservations convert to sales.
Speaking of price, early reservation holders who plunked down a $5,000 down payment will get the Cyberlandr at its best price, but that’s still $39,995 according to the company’s website. 20 slots were offered at that rate; all reservations are filled and in fact, the website shows most special-price reservation tiers are sold out. Space is still available for $1,000 deposits that allow reservation holders to buy the camper at $43,995, and there’s unlimited space for $100 deposits at a cost of $44,995. If you wait until an actual Cyberlandr camper is built, the cost goes up to $49,995.
Considering Tesla says the Cybertruck will start at $40,000, the Cyberlandr alone will cost as much or more than some truck trim levels. Still, with Musk’s kind word on the camper concept, we suspect many of these reservations will follow through. The bigger question is when it will happen – initial Cybertruck production is supposed to start in late 2021 but half the year is already gone and we’ve yet to see a final design. And actual development/testing of the camper can’t begin until there’s a truck to test with.
