Last week, a local council in Norfolk blamed the increase in illegal wild camping on the rising numbers of caravan and motorhome owners. They were accused of wild camping in car parks and blocking public toilets by incorrectly disposing of waste.
Wild camping is technically illegal in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but not in Scotland.
As a result of this, many requests were made to the council to provide ‘motorhome aire’ facilities in the area.
Motorhome aires are for short overnight stops, generally between 24 and 48 hours, and are only for self-contained motorcaravans.
They are not for caravans as they are not self-contained, and they are advised to use sites.
All motorhomes and many campervans are classified by the DVLA as motorcaravans.
No camping behaviour is allowed, so things like chairs, tables, awnings and barbecues are not allowed.
They are not bookable in advance and are usually close to town centres – unlike campsites.
These are usually quite far away from the attractions and facilities required by motorhome owners.

Aires are incredibly popular in Europe, with camping expert Alan Rogers estimating that there are over 11,500 aires on the continent.
They are normally open all year round, where the majority of campsites are closed between October and Easter.
The Campaign for Real Aires (CAMpRA) are working with local authorities and landowners all over the country to set up more UK based aires.
They have been instrumental in setting up over 100 new aire facilities for motorcaravans in the UK over the last year, with many more in the pipeline.
