The fomer F1 star described the car as “exceptional” and said he was a “big fan” of the vehicle. Mr Button said the car gave him “great confidence” from the outset as he did 30 laps of the Hethel test track.

He said: “You always expect a Lotus to have good mechanical grip through the low-speed corners but there was plenty of downforce in the high-speed corners too.

“That means the feeling of great balance is the same no matter how you’re driving it.

“It’s exceptional and I’m a big fan.”

He added: “The overall position of the gearstick in relation to the wheel, the pedals, everything was where it should be and that gives you great confidence from the start.

“I love the infotainment system too, which has everything you need and is really simple so you can get back to the important part, which is the driving.”

Lotus’ Emira model is based on the design for the all-electric Evija hypercar which Button owns.

Lotus has said the new Emira is “for the drivers” and is a model capable of “blistering performance and maximum thrills”.

The model will be fitted with a 3.5litre supercharged V6 and will have the world’s most powerful production four-cylinder engine.

The model’s engine is designed in union with AMG and will deliver up to 360bhp.

Alongside this, Lotus has promised the Emira will be the only car in its class to generate significant levels of downforce.

This will ensure “outstanding performance” and “exceptional grip” at all speeds when on the road.

Button said: “The Lotus purists will love it, and the thing that people new to Lotus will love is the premium quality of the interior.
