The AirCar has a BMW engine and runs on petrol, but also boasts a rear propellor and wings that fold away in three minutes, for when you’ve had enough of skydriving. It was made by Slovakian firm Klein Vision and this week completed its first intercity flight, taking just 35 minutes to cover the 60 miles between Nitra and Bratislava.

Company co-founder Anton Zajac said: “It has turned science fiction into a reality.”

Hyundai chief Michael Cole said on Tuesday that flying cars could be helping to beat the traffic by the end of the decade. So it might not be long before we’re all hitting the ultimate highway.
