DVLA tax refund: How to get a refund on your car tax
A Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) tax refund allows motorists to claim back money spent on a period of tax coverage. This can be a result of selling your car or by taking it off the road (SORN).
How to get a DVLA tax refund
A tax refund will be automatically triggered when you notify the DVLA that your car has been sold.
This can be done online, by post or over the phone.
Once the DLVA has been informed of the sale, your Direct Debit will be cancelled automatically, if that’s how you pay.

A refund cheque will be then be issued covering any full months left on your car tax.
The tax refund is calculated from the date the DVLA receives your information.
The cheque will be posted to the name and address on the car’s log book.
However, drivers should also be aware that refunds won’t be issued for any credit card fees, the five per cent surcharge on some direct debit payments or the 10 per cent surcharge on a single six-month payment.

It can take up to six weeks for a DVLA tax refund to be sent out.
Motorists are advised to get in contact with the DVLA if they haven’t received their cheque in that time.
The DVLA says the quickest way of getting your refund is by following the online process.
Speaking in 2018, DVLA Vehicles Service Manager, Rohan Gye, said: “While some of our digital services have over 90% take-up there are still millions of motorists who tell us they’ve sold their vehicle by post.
“This means that they will have to wait longer for their automatic refund of any unused tax.
“My advice is the next time you sell your car – tell us online.”
Motorists can also get a tax refund for any unused months if they take their car off the road.
This is called a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and the vehicle must be kept on private land such a driveway or garage.
