Current proposals from Transport for London (TfL) and London Mayor Sadiq Khan have proposed higher fees and a larger area which would apply to the ULEZ. This is being done to combat London’s air pollution problems.

According to TfL, four out of five cars already meet the ULEZ emissions standards, so they are now targeting older polluting cars, motorcycles, lighter vans and minibuses to take action.

TfL have started sending out letters to drivers to make them aware of the upcoming changes.

The letter warns drivers: “Your vehicle may not meet the ULEZ standards”.

It continues: “The Ultra Low Emissions Zone is expanding from October 25 2021, and our records show your vehicle may not meet the ULEZ standards.

“Transport for London (TfL) has provided the DVLA with a list of number plates of vehicles that we have identified as likely to be affected by the ULEZ, and the DVLA has sent these letters out on our behalf.

“If you drive your vehicle anywhere within the expanded ULEZ from October 25 2021 and it does not meet the ULEZ standards, there will be a daily charge of £12.50.”

TfL have admitted that some who receive the letter may actually be exempt from charges.

This is because the warning letters have only been sent out to owners with cars older than a certain date rather than looking into a model’s actual emissions.

Some on social media have questioned the changes, with many criticising the letters.

One Twitter user said: “Hi @TfL, thanks for the letter about London’s Ultra Low Emission zone and how my vehicle may not meet the standards.

“Since I live in Stockport, I don’t see it keeping me awake all night!”

Another commenter said: “@TfL @SadiqKhan I live in Surrey. Today I got a letter from TFL advising me that the ULEZ is being extended from October 25.
