Generally, single yellow lines mean no waiting or parking during the times shown on nearby signs or at the entrance of a controlled parking zone. There are no standard times or rules so drivers must always check the signs before waiting or parking.
Despite these rather broad rules, there are some little-known ways motorists can use the lines without receiving a parking ticket.
Yellow lines allow drivers to stop to unload or stop while passengers board or alight.
Road users can load or unload for a maximum of 40 minutes.
The AA states that single yellow lines mean no waiting or parking during the times shown on nearby signs or at the entrance to a controlled parking zone.
The Highway Code explains that double yellow lines “indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time even if there are no upright signs”.
Most people assume that double yellow lines mean no parking at any time, but there are some exceptions.
Drivers may be able to quickly stop to load or unload heavy goods.
If a motorist is a blue badge holder, they can usually park on both double and yellow lines.

This can be up to three hours, providing they have their badge clearly on display.
These exceptions won’t always apply though, so motorists are advised to check for local signs or kerb edge markings.
If there are pairs of short yellow lines over the kerb edge, no one is allowed to load at any time.
Even with a blue badge, drivers cannot park anywhere where there are loading restrictions.
