Experts at GEM Motoring Assist says correct tyre pressures can help maximise fuel economy as well as boost safety. The warning comes after fresh research from IAMRoadSmart shows one in five road users never check their tyres.
They warn as many as one-third of younger drivers never check their tyres and could be missing out on the savings.
Chief Executive Neil Worth said under-inflated tyres could make the vehicle “use more fuel”.
He said: “Regular tyre safety checks reduce the risk of an incident while on the roads.
“However, an estimated one in five drivers never checks tyre tread – a startling number which rises to one in three among young drivers.
“Checking and maintaining tyres also reduces the cost of motoring as under-inflated tyres will wear quicker and cause the vehicle to use more fuel.”
IAM RoadSmart warns inadequate tread or incorrect pressures mean the safety systems on cars do not work as effectively.
They warn under-inflated tyres would generally reduce your vehicle’s ability to grip the road.
This could also compromise the car’s handling in another safety concern.

The experts say this can lead to “unpredictable vehicle behaviour” and could increase the risk of a blowout.
Meanwhile, over-inflated tyres have a smaller contact area with the road.
This leads to increased stopping distances and reduced grip which will have a major effect on the condition of the tyre.
This will likely lead to more wear across the central part of the tyre, leading to a shorter lifespan.
