Experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts warns using old towels and plastic carrier bags could prevent much of the frost build-up this Autumn and winter. These household items will prevent drivers needing professional car covers and should offer an “immediate solution” to frost cover, boosting visibility and helping drivers avoid fines.

It means drivers may not need to worry about de-icing their car in the mornings at all, saving time for those who are “running late”.

They said: “If you are the type of person that is likely to be running late an immediate solution to a frosty windscreen is your best bet.

“You can achieve this by using an old towel and covering your windscreen.

“Trap the top two corners of the towel in the driver and passenger doors to secure before the temperature drops the night before travelling.

“Your towel will take the brunt of the ice, meaning your windscreen will be clear when it is removed.

“Get those dusty beach towels out and put them to good use!”

Drivers should use a towel big enough to cover the windscreen and should make sure all areas of the glass are covered.

Leaving a slight gap may lead to some frost escaping through which will need to be addressed before setting off in the morning.

Towels should be held in place using the cars windscreen wipers to ensure it doesn’t blow away during the night.

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts said plastic carrier bags could also play their part in reducing frost cover.

They have urged road users to place these over the wing mirrors with an elastic band.

Frost shoud form on the bag instead of the wing mirror, leaving this completely clear to identify road hazards.
