Aura Concept EV Sportscar Is a Vision of the Future
Automakers are keen to bring electric vehicles to market, and sprinkled among the small EV hatchbacks and mass-market EV crossover SUVs you’d expect are coming to market are a number of sportier, more niche options. There’s the Porsche Taycan, the Performance and Plaid versions of Tesla products, and so forth. A few dreamers are thinking about the core enthusiast, and that’s why the Aura Concept has our attention.
This roofless two-seater looks exactly like the sort of indulgent Miata-meets-McLaren-Elva mashup of our dreams. It’s fun, it’s futuristic, and it’s something you (most likely) won’t be banned from driving in 10 years. It also makes good use of time period juxtaposition, from the decidedly vintage rear wheel spats and barchetta body style to the very sci-fi rear end, with its LED-studded overbite.
Underneath the skin are 44 kWh worth of batteries. This is a fully functional vehicle, offering a claimed (and optimistic) 400 mile range, although there’s no word on what range looks like when driven enthusiastically.
Whether anyone outside of the consortium of British companies that built the Aura Concept as a demonstration of their abilities and ideas will be able to drive one is an open question. Just like the Sony Vision-S concept, it’s fully realized but may not go anywhere. At least not in this form. But the Aura’s intent is to spark the imagination, and it certainly has. Automotive enthusiasm isn’t going anywhere, and we’re going to need some EVs that are purely intended as fun-mobiles to win hearts and minds as we transition to a greener future. If they look like this, so much the better.
