2022 Four Wheeler Pickup Truck Of The Year: Introduction
It’s finally here—time to crown our 2022 Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year. Following closely on the heels of our 2022 Four Wheeler SUV of the Year test, the program that you will see in the following coverage is the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work and several months of planning and preparing. The days spent testing are long. We are up before the sun rises and we work until nightfall, and beyond.
Our 2022 judging panel was comprised of some of the most knowledgeable minds in the off-road industry, with backgrounds in off-road, diesel, lifted, new, and classic off-road vehicles. This year we’ve also brought back some familiar faces from Four Wheeler’s history, which gave our panel more than 100 years of combined time on staff. This ensured that our judging staff was just as diverse as the vehicles that we were testing. We all eat, sleep, and breathe pickups and off-road.
This year’s event brought us back closer to a sense of normalcy after a dark 18 months in the throes of a global pandemic. While we were able to bring back more staffing and test in more exotic locations, we remained ever-vigilant, with frequent vehicle sanitation and physical distancing while also adhering to state, local, and CDC health and safety guidance. Testing was completed in early November 2021, prior to the latest COVID wave and new round of travel and event restrictions.
For our 2022 Pickup Truck of the Year competition, we invited all pickup models that were either all-new or significantly updated for the 2022 model year, and available to us at the time of testing. Eligible trucks must also be equipped with a two-speed transfer case with a dedicated low-range gear to be eligible. Vehicles that fit the testing admissibility requirements for our 2021 event but missed the deadline to enter were also eligible. Three manufacturers accepted the invitation, sending a total of six pickups for testing.
Each of these pickups brought with it a unique skill set, and they were all impressive to our judges in one area or another. However, in the end, only one could take home the coveted trophy. The winner showed exceptional performance in each of the tested criteria, and continually impressed our judges. Which pickup scored the highest when the dust finally settled? Read on to find out.
