2022 Ford Bronco Raptor Fuel Economy Close to F-150 Raptor

We’ll be honest, we knew that the 2022 Bronco Raptor was going to get worse fuel mileage than the regular versions. However, we weren’t quite expecting the all-around smaller Bronco Raptor to match the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor’s thirst for hydrocarbons. But that’s what the numbers released today by the EPA reveal. It gets a city rating of 15 mpg, a highway rating of 16 mpg, and a combined rating of 15 mpg. That’s one thirsty 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6. The standard Bronco Sasquatch, by comparison, gets 17 mpg across the board.

To top it off, the Ranger-based Bronco Raptor’s 3.0 liter V-6 gets the exact same economy ratings as the full-size F-150 Raptor on 37 inch tires with its 3.5-liter V-6. This is in spite of the two vehicles weighing within 10 pounds of each other, and the Bronco Raptor making significantly less torque (90 ft-lbs less) and a little less horsepower (20 hp less). We do estimate the Bronco to be a tenth quicker to 60 mph than the Raptor 37 (5.5 sec versus 5.6 seconds for the latter).

The Bronco Raptor’s fuel economy penalty may come down to gearing. Both Raptors have a 10-speed automatic transmission, but the Bronco Raptor has slightly different ratios for first and second gear. The Bronco Raptor has a 4.71 first and 3.00 second (technically a 2.997, but effectively a 3.00) gear, while the F-150 Raptor has a 4.69 first and 2.98 second gear. Their final drive gearing is also different, as the Bronco Raptor uses a 4.70:1 ratio and the F-150 Raptor uses a 4.10:1 ratio, even with its 37 inch tires. Factor in the Bronco Raptor’s blocky shape and you get a sense of why the Bronco Raptor is so thirsty.

Should Hybrid Raptors Be in Our Future?

Embarrassing both, sort of, is the F-150 Powerboost Hybrid with its 3.5 liter turbocharged V-6 and 44 hp electric motor combo. Even with it being 92 pounds heavier and making 20 hp less (5,832 lbs at 430 hp combined for the F-150 Hybrid), the electrically assisted F-150 is 0.3 second faster to 60 mph than the F-150 Raptor and potentially 0.2 second faster than the Bronco Raptor. Despite that, the F-150 Hybrid is capable of 23 mpg across the board when looking at its fuel economy numbers—and monumental range, topping 750 miles in some configurations. We’re starting to wonder if Ford might want to make its Raptors more electrifying—more fuel efficient, and also quicker—in the future.
