2021 BMW M4 Competition With Top-Mounted Exhaust Goes Tandem Drifting

The M4 is the perfect drift car.

The new G80 BMW M4 Competition may be the perfect drift car platform. Don’t believe us? Well then maybe these two purpose-built BMW M4 Competitions will change your mind. The Redbull Driftbrothers are ready to take on the Drift Masters European Championship with their brand new BMW M4 Competition-based drift cars. To see what it takes to elevate the BMW M4 to motorsport-ready levels of build, BMW M made a video to showcase the builds and their abilities on the Redbull Ring in Austria.

The stock G80 BMW M4 Competition is the perfect platform to build a drift car. Thanks to its powerful engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, and long-wheelbase the BMW M4 is a stable and capable platform. BMW M4 road cars even come with an on-board drift rating system in the infotainment for customers to enjoy setting high scores on track.

In stock form, the BMW M4 Competition is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-6 engine that produces 503 horsepower (375 Kilowatts) and 479 lb-ft (650 Newton-meters) of torque. This monstrous engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF torque converter automatic transmission that can handle the abuse of this strong engine.

So what does it take to build a G80 M4 drift car? Well for one the interior needs to go as leather with contrasting stitching only adds unnecessary weight. Next, the power of the stock S58 engine was doubled to produce 1,050 horsepower (782 Kilowatts) which will help break traction during drift competitions.

The BMW M team even helped build custom aero components for the M4 drift cars which include revised front aero components to improve cooling. For driftbrothers Elias Hountondj and Johannes Hountondji, the European Drift Masters season is just getting started and we cannot wait to see the M4 take on the competition. Until then, this incredible display of driver skill on the Redbull Ring should be enough to hold us over.
