Volkswagen Releases First Teaser Image for Facelifted Tiguan

Volkswagen’s most popular vehicle in 2019 will be refreshed this year and the brand is giving you your first look at the updated crossover. With new sheet metal, new lights, and VW’s latest infotainment system, it promises to be a solid improvement.

New LED head and taillights will define the new look at night and look to move the Tiguan’s design closer to the Mk8 Golf’s new look. It won’t just be new lights, though. A new front end will change substantially enough to require new sheet metal and a new hood, according to VW’s head of product planning, Hendrick Muth.

The design will push the front end to be more vertical, giving it a more aggressive, SUV-ish sounds, apparently. Information on the interior is still limited at this point, though new ambient light colors are promised as is MIB3 infotainment system.

That means VW’s latest software, which can be updated over the air or at the dealership, opening the possibility up to new apps as the life of the vehicle plays out.

So far, it looks like engine options will remain the same but we know that a couple of variants are being planned for Europe. A plug-in hybrid variant has been confirmed for Europe, but will not be sold in the US, according to Hein Schafer, senior VP of product marketing for VW US.

A more powerful variant, meanwhile, may be on the cards. The upcoming Tiguan R may only be available on the short-wheelbase version for now, but there’s still hope.

“Yes, we are continuously looking for ways to upgrade horsepower,” said Schafer. “It’s hard to say, but the possibility is there. No changes to engines for now, though.”

As of right now, the European launch of the next-generation Tiguan is planned for this year. The North American launch is expected next year.
