Despite little to crow about in recent years – MC12 GT1 success notwithstanding – there’s no doubt Maserati’s racing heritage is second to none. It might all have been in black and white, but the Trident won. A lot.

And there is no more famous racing Maserati than the 250F, a car that Maserati is now paying tribute to with… a Levante and a Ghibli in new colours. Oh. The image boost from the MC20 supercar surely can’t come soon enough. Officially these new F Tributo Special Editions, while acknowledging the 250F, actually serve to celebrate a grander occasion: April 25th, 2021 marks 95 years since Maserati first entered a race. The race in question was the Targa Florio, the car was the Tipo26 and the result was… a win, of course, Alfieri Maserati behind the wheel and success claimed in the 1,500cc class. Talk about starting as you mean to go on…

The new Maseratis have been shown at the Shanghai show, sporting two new colours – Rosso Tributo and Azzurro Tributo – and tweaked design that “evokes Maserati’s audacious spirit”. See the yellow accents on the 21-inch Anteo wheels (because Fangio’s 250F was red with yellow), new badges and a body coloured trident logo on the C-pillar. The interiors will match the outside, red or yellow stitching against black ‘Pieno Fiore’ leather. And for those wondering about blue and yellow, they’re the City of Modena’s colours.

It hasn’t been confirmed yet which Ghibli and Levante engines the F Tributo Special Edition will be available with. It would hardly seem fitting to use the entry level V6, so hopefully the 430hp S version will be employed, capable enough in both cars for 0-62mph dash in around five seconds. Or maybe Maserati will celebrate in real style and use the V8 versions as the basis for the F Tributo. Don’t forget that means 200mph potential in the Ghibli – those Maserati legends of yore would surely approve.
