Hyundai and Kia are Recalling Vehicles for Potential Fuel Hose Leak

Hyundai Motor America is recalling about 207,000 2013-14 Sonatas produced between November 2012 and January 2014 for a fuel line issue that could increase the risk of a fire. A National Highway Safety Administration document says the low-pressure fuel hose could crack over time from engine-compartment heat. NHTSA says this could cause a fuel leak, increasing the risk of an engine-compartment fire. Occupants might also notice a fuel smell.

Hyundai says it is still investigating potential causes but hasn’t identified a solution yet, saying it thinks the hose material might be more susceptible to heat under “certain vehicle operating conditions,” according to the NHTSA document.

Hyundai also said it knows of no fires, accidents or injuries and will begin working with dealers and owners as soon as possible.

Kia said it is recalling about 142,000 Optimas for the same issue.

Kia is also recalling around 51,000 2011-2012 Sedona minivans for a fuel rail that could crack and leak fuel, according to a separate NHTSA document.
