There’s always that final pause before firing off a new engine for the first time. The second that your subconscious asks if you’ve done everything right, and not forgotten something obvious like a main cap or bearing. Then, you fire off your new engine and hear the silence of a properly supported crankshaft or connecting rod and you know you’ve done everything correctly.

If you’re wondering what it would be like if you simply didn’t install any crankshaft or connecting rod bearings, there is now an answer. You’re probably sure what the engine will sound like, but the chaotic mechanics at Garage 54 show you the carnage in action.



Surprisingly, the engine is relatively quiet—despite the huge tolerances because of the missing bearings. Unsurprisingly, the engine is absolutely destroyed by this experiment. The obviously destroyed engine is only part of the fun of Garage 54’s antics. The team tears down the engine after running it without bearings to see exactly what failed. Spoiler alert: everything. More interesting than what failed is how the parts catastrophically failed.
