1986 Dodge Caravan Is an American Revolution
When the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan appeared for the 1984 model year, the American automotive landscape changed forever. Here were vans based on the efficient front-wheel-drive K Platform, roomier yet more efficient than big station wagons and more sensible for real-world driving than full-frame trucks… and none of the other manufacturers could match them for at least a few more years. Here’s a magazine advertisement for the 1986 Caravan, when it drove at the top of the minivan universe.
The Caravan name lived on until the end of the 2020 model year, when the Grand Caravan joined the Journey in oblivion. You can still buy a new ’20 Grand Caravan today, but you won’t feel like a true participant in the Minivan Revolution.
